I am in love with Hawaiian quilting. In the past, I've made a number of blocks in this style, appliqued and quilted by hand. I then stretched them over a frame and hung them on the wall, or gave them as gifts. Here are a few of them:
The themes of traditional Hawaiian quilts are usually inspired from nature. Fabric is cut the way we cut snowflakes as a child - in a symmetrical design. Usually only two solid colors were used. Quilting is done in an echo pattern around the applique, much like water laps an island.
