It is a Winter Wonderland....Again

I don't remember a winter so cold, and with as much snow, in a really long time.  Decades maybe.  It will make Spring this year all the more welcome.

We had another 12 inches fall yesterday.  My husband will be snowblowing a good part of the morning.

The view out my kitchen window this morning

I have to admit that it is lovely
A good day to stay inside and sew.

52 Week Challenge - Week 8

Week 8, hooray!

I finished a set of batik placemats this week.  My daughter says they look Asian.  I was thinking of naming them Serenity, because I can always use more of that.

We had another busy weekend with family visiting.  One night, we all went roller skating.  From the youngest to the oldest, we all enjoyed ourselves.  I will admit that it took a couple of minutes for me to get my body into a comfortable roller skating groove, but then gliding around the rink was lots of fun.

What have you been up to this week?

Project Quilting Week 3

Project Quilting, hosted by KimsCraftyApple has been going strong, with many wonderful entries each challenge. Congrats to this week's winner - Dashasel, for her unique valentine baby bumper.

Kim herself has been busy quilting in preparation for a new addition to their family.  She recently made these blocks using a layer cake of dill blossom fabric she purchased from my shop.
Isn't the combination of fabrics unexpected and fun!

Kim also makes fabulous art pieces like the owl wall quilt pictured below.

If you aren't already following her blog, you can check it out here.

New Fabrics - Camelot and Anthology Story Strips

This week brought some beautiful new fabrics to my shop.  Both sets have lots of depth and rich color.  The first set is from Jason Yenter's latest line Camelot.

(More from this collection coming soon)
The second group of gorgeous batiks are from Anthology.  I have six different collections of their story strips.  This one is called Soup to Nuts.

With Spring just around the corner, it seems fitting to have some bright fabrics to play with.

52 Week Challenge - Week 7

I made this little Ipod touch case for my granddaughter using fabric she designed plus some kona cotton.

Just right for a tween girly girl

I tried to reflect her design in the quilting.
This is how it happened.  Several weeks ago, my granddaughter (she is eleven) drew her design with colored markers.  I sent it to Spoonflower, where they printed an 8" swatch and mailed it back.  Today, I cut up the swatch, appliqued it to a kona background, and then did tiny free motion quilting mimicking parts of her heart design.

The basic pattern is from a tutorial by Sew Momma Sew. I changed it up a bit by adding quilting, applique, and substituting rickrack for the elastic band.

I have a set of batik place mats in the works, as well as a knitted scarf, but this is the only project I totally finished this week.  Crafting time was shortened as we had the joy of babysitting our youngest grand over the weekend (usually my main block of time to sew) while her parents went to NYC to celebrate their 8th wedding anniversary.  My daughter is travel bargain hunter extraordinaire.  She arranged for a penthouse apartment complete with sun deck, a show - Million Dollar Quartet (which they loved), dinner at a nice restaurant, and brunch the next day,  all for a very reasonable cost.   I keep telling her she should go into the travel business.

Judy Nolan has done another wonderful write up about some 52 week participants.   Thank you Judy!

Can't wait to see what you have been up to this week.

52 Week Challenge - Week 6

I finally finished getting all the 2010 invoices into Quickbooks.  Whoohoo!

This was one of those projects where the finish line was everything, and the process was no fun at all.   Still it was a necessary (albeit boring) step in preparing to do our yearly taxes, so I pressed on.

Resolved - in 2011, I will keep up with the bookkeeping on a weekly basis because, as the saying goes, "it is easier to keep up than to catch up."

The other saying that kept me on task when I got bogged down was, "the best way to get the job done, is to start it."  Plus the fact that if I didn't get it done, there wouldn't be anything to show you this week.

So how is everyone doing this week?  I am looking forward to hearing about (and seeing) your finished projects.

Let's get busy,

P.S. Please don't forget to click and comment on each others creations too.  Meaghan Makes is having a neat Giveaway on her blog. And Judy Nolan has done another wonderful post introducing more 52 Week participants and their shops.

P.P.S. - If you are new to this challenge, jump right in.  Whether you post once, or every week, we are glad to have you.

Treasuries are Like a Quilt

Treasuries are great! They are fun to look at as an art form, almost like a quilt in their 4 x 4 square format . Plus, they provide easy shopping links to all kinds of shops. Here are a few my fabric has been featured in lately:

A New Line of Fabric is in Town! (well, almost)

I am excited to announce that batiks from Anthology Fabrics will soon be arriving in my shop.  We'll start with these 2 1/2" story strips, and then add some of their other batiks by the bolt.  Color like this is sure to inspire some gorgeous quilts.

Skins for Your Sewing Machine

Have you seen these?

You can design your own skin for your sewing machine by uploading a picture of a quilt you've made, your pet, your favorite vacation spot, or anything else you fancy.    What a great idea!  You can check them out here.

Makes me wish I had a Bernina.

Recycled Paper Clips, Buttons, and Paper Scraps

It is a good feeling to use the things already on hand for crafting. After all, isn't that how quilts came to be - women using recycled clothing and other fabric scraps to make something beautiful and functional at the same time.

This idea evolved when I needed a way to attach together my business card and other small items included in outgoing packages. With a drawer full of paper scraps, a can of buttons, and lots of extra paperclips on hand, here's what I came up with.

To make them, you will need the items mentioned in the previous paragraph, some glue, and a small flower paper punch.  A cotton swab works well as a glue applicator, and wax paper is handy as a non stick work surface.

Lay out your paper flowers, wrong side up, on the sheet of waxed paper. Dip the clips (single side, not the double side used to insert paper) into a puddle of glue, and then lay on top of flower. Let dry.

Flip flower over and use cotton swab to apply glue to button.

My granddaughter was my hand model
Attach to front of flower and let dry. Voila!

Cute and functional at the same time.
