A Big Congrats to the April Listing Club!

Party time!

We made it through a month of listing at least one new item a day.  Redbirdjewellery started the whole thing by inviting anyone who was interested to join her in a challenge to list something everyday in April.  Some of us have more than one shop.  Some listed multiple items every day, others were content to get in their one item, and some of us even missed a day here or there, but we made it through!  Congrats to everyone in the Listing Club!  I've posted something from each of their shops with a link you can follow if you would like to see more.

Rustic Handwoven Placemats

Just finished these placemats.  I had fun trying out a new technique with strips of fabric woven into a cotton canvas.  I like the way they turned out.

If you would like to try this project, you can find the directions in the Spring 2010 Issue of Quilts and More.  In case you can't get your hands on this issue, following are the instructions with a few of my own suggestions thrown in.

Materials Needed:

You will need about a yard of fabric for each placemat.  Scraps would work fine, or you can use fat quarters from your stash.

You also need 36" wide or wider latch-hook rug canvas 3 3/4 squares per inch.

Finally, you need a Locker Hook, which is a 6 1/2 inch aluminum tool shaped like a needle with a large eye, and a hook on the opposite end.  These are generally located in the same area where the latch-hook canvas is sold.  This tool will make the craft quicker and more enjoyable than the safety pin suggested in the magazine article.

Making the Mats:
  • Cut fabrics into 3/4" strips across the width of the fabric and then cut the strips in half so that each strip is 3/4" x 22"
  • Cut latch hook canvas 54 squares tall x 70 squares long for each placemat.
  • Fold under 2 rows on long ends of canvas and zigzag stitch to hem.  Repeat with both short sides, so that you have a 2 row hem all the way around.  When you are stitching these hems, line up the holes as best as you can.  You will be threading fabric strips through them.
  • Fold and press strips of fabric in half lengthwise with wrong sides together.
  • Thread strip of fabric into Locker Hook tool.  Beginning at one short edge of the canvas, weave the tool over and under mesh for 4 inches or so.  Then pull the tool through so that the fabric follows.  Work through the hemmed edges as if through one thickness.  Repeat until opposite end of the canvas is reached.  Leave approximately 3"-4" of fabric loose at the beginning and ending of the row, you will be trimming it later.
  • Alternate under and over pattern with each row and try and keep strips as flat as possible.  If you want to weave random rows rather than row by row in order to space out your colors, I suggest that you mark either all the up or all the down rows with a small pen mark on the canvas.
  • Zigzag stitch through strips and canvas at the short edges.
  • Using a pressing cloth, press the mat from both sides.  The canvas will soften up as well as flatten out.
  • Trim the fabric fringe to 2" on both short sides.

Last Saturday in April

Favorite Handiwork

Here's a sneak peak at one of the things I've been working on lately.  I generally have several projects going at once, and at least one of them is something I can sit on the couch and watch T.V. while doing.  This is the most recent handiwork in progress.  I am enjoying the process, as well as the results, so it is a win-win project.

If  you have a favorite type of handiwork you like to do while relaxing in the evening, I would love to hear about it.

Batik Charm Quilt Finished

Hooray, a finished quilt at last.  It seems I am always caught up in smaller projects, and life's maintenance tasks, and a full time job to boot.  So it feels really good to have completed a UFO finally.

This batik charm quilt comes from a batik 5" square swap the Quiltsy team did late last summer.  I hosted the swap, which was a lot of fun.  We each ended up with close to 100 new batik squares.  After adding fabrics from my own stash of batiks to this lap sized quilt,  there are over 100 different fabrics included.
It is just a simple 10 square x 10 square pattern, I let the fabric do the work.  I did have fun with the quilting though.  I stitched a large stipple all over the middle portion of the quilt, feathers in the white border, and then a tighter stipple on the outer pieced border.
I will be listing it in my kimbuktu shop tomorrow.

The Bees are Out

...and a shipment of fabric was waiting for me on my doorstep when I got home this afternoon.  I had to take a few pictures, and do at least one listing before heading back outside to walk and do some yardwork.

I am very happy with the Glam Garden Fat Quarter bundles from Josephine Kimberling.  They coordinate well with the 2 new Kona Cottons that came in, don't you think?  That wasn't planned, but I love when it works out that way.  Ms. Kimberling has a fabulous free bag pattern available featuring her fabrics, maybe some of you have seen it here.  I will be listing these fabrics and more over the next few days in my fabric shop.

Well I best get like those bees and get busy!

Pin or Hand Baste?

I admit that I am a pin baster, except on some Hawaiian applique handwork when I do stitch in the basting by hand.

This is a batik charm quilt I'm currently quilting.  The fabrics were gathered from a swap the Quiltsy team did over the summer.  I am finally getting around to using them!

What is your preferred method of basting?

Spring Weekend

We had a lovely spring weekend visiting with some of our children and grandchildren.  What a blessing children are, whether your own, your grands, or someone else's.  I do so enjoy being around their sweet, uncomplicated, and sincere little selves.

Here is a picture of a spontaneous picnic they had while the adults did yardwork.

After a pleasant time with family, my husband and I ended the day with an early evening stroll around our neighborhood, admiring the spring blossoms, and listening to the cardinals call.

Hope you all had a restful and revitalizing weekend too.

April Listing Club

As I mentioned in my last post, I've joined an April Listing Club on Etsy.  Our goal is to post at least one NEW item a day for the month.  Since I have 3 shops, it is not too hard to come up with something for at least one of them each day.  Some other participants are listing more than one a day, or even have multiple shops where they are listing items each day.

Here are a few of my favorites so far:

Blue n Lime Teapot Cozy by CozyTeaTreasures

Coral Stack and Sterling Silver Earrings by  redbirdjewellery

Bamboo and Silk Scarf by KnitFrekkles

Boss Studs Sterling Silver and Blue Earrings by DeborahJonesJewelry

There are many more items I would like to share, but I will save them for another day.  After all, we have the whole month of April!

We post to a new forum thread daily, and you can find us on Twitter by searching for #listingclub
